How small things are planned

Soaring land values have forced people to view small, smaller, smallest spaces with a more benign eye. The plus point is: you thank your lucky stars as you whip through cleaning your tiny abode, before tearing off to work ever, that you do not have another five huge rooms hungrily awaiting your attention. In this case, less is more. So whether you are redesigning your office or even building on a it-can't -be-done plot, take heart, it can be done.

Goal is to effectively make the most of every inch of available space and even create space that to be there. The options are that spatially it cosy, pretty, intimate and personal or congested cluttered and uncomfortable. Take your pick. Actually a small space is an architectural and design challenge whether to an interior designer or the user himself. An interior designer would be in possession of the tips we are about to reveal, so here we focus mainly on the you and me reader. Volumes enclosed in tight physical envelopes demand all the innovative and creative skills of the designer.

CLEVER PLANNING

This begins with preparing a checklist of actual necessities, in order to focus on what has to be done to achieve this initially, and more lately, keeping future needs in mind. Understanding each need that figures in the checklist and providing for it in the layout becomes the basic plan of the space. A well planned layout ensures each activity has a specific minimum area for comfortable effectiveness .Since the primary restriction is lack of space, avoid, like the plague, dead corners and unusable niches. Diagonally placed furniture in a corner kills the corner outright. Experiment, rearrangements cost nothing, all that's needed is a helpful brawny husband, or friend, if husband is not available.

FURNITURE

Furniture maintains and reinforces the aesthetic appeal of a room. Next to movement trails, furniture occupies a major chunk of space. Furniture design not only save space but also use it efficiently. A on choice among designers is built-in furniture, the furniture becomes part of the room's structure. Built-in seating, storage, beds, tables and working surfaces are some of the features that succeed in the technique of saving space, plus being cost effective.

Maximize. A single space can cater to different activities, A pleasant living space by day easily converts into a bedroom at night. The sofas pull out into beds or do something equally clever to give you a place for sweet slumber. Side tables become bedside tabbies and lift up to reveal that’s your secret. YOU want your home to be as spacious as le so the dining table doubles as a desk and can be hitched up on to the wall when not in use. Plan niches on either side of the lift up dining flap, ae for dining things and the other for books and papers. Maybe that is not enough, your check - that only a proper writing desk would fulfil your needs, so can you live with a desk-cum-dining table instead of a dining-table-cum desk? It is not a good idea to have a center table when space is at a premium but if it doubles as a dining table, you might find it acceptable.

What if you have inherited a beautiful but heavy carved antique piece and, regardless of checklists, you do not want to part with it, make it the focus of your space. Establish a link between it and the rest of the furniture the best way you can. Matching upholstery, draperies, table linen and rugs make for cohesiveness. Lightweight furniture is a good option in a small space. Consider a glass-topped dining table supported on mild steel pipes and matching chairs with fabric that goes with the rest of the decor. Ideally furniture caters to the theme of the room and the requirement of the user, balancing the two to achieve visual harmony.

ALTERATION OF THE STRUCTURE

The physical determinant of a space is the structure enveloping it. The walls, floor and roof become the deciding factor of the nature and quality of the volume enclosed within them. Provided structural stability is not compromised (the advice of a structural engineer is imperative) claustrophobic spaces can be opened up by knocking down restricting walls, enabling a special flow. An open plan creates visual spaciousness.

COLOUR

It I a fact that the off-whites and pale pastels create the illusion of more space. An all white decor brings a lightness that is hard to beat. Let us assume you are not really bothered about the smallness of your abode - there is no reason why you should not have the colors you love. If you need inspiration, get it from nature's abundant variety of color combination and make your space intensely appealing. Imagine the blue of a corn owner teamed with leaf green. Um-m-m! Brighten up a dull corner with a contrasting splash of color. Loo up there s a whole ceiling waiting for your colorful inspiration.

Whatever you decide, try to visualize the finished effect, you have to live happily with it.

LIGHT AND SHADE

The play of light and shade can create a dramatic effect. The basic rule is to get as much light and ventilation as possible, even if it means alterations to the structure to compensate an existing tight physical volume. Direct sunlight through windows or skylights, or filtering it through stained glass, or redirecting it through jails or louvers would be an interesting feature to suit the tempo of the room. Lightning and ventilation should determine the placement of window to ensure cross-ventilation. At night artificial lighting can change the ambiance of a room - is it a warm glow that you want, or the disco effect of lights bright and beautiful? Lights, whether table lamps, or free standing up lights or even unusual wall fixtures enliven any small space.

SURFACE TREATMENTS

A monochromatic scheme can be vitalized by giving one of the walls a different surface treatment. Mirror walls can create the illusion of an enlarged space. Keep architectural features like arches and moldings to the minimum.

To sum up simplicity is the keynote. Avoid unnecessary furniture and too many accessories. Shop, keeping your theme in mind and link the elements in your home to create a holistic image that reflects your style. You do not need stress at home so keep it harmoniously simple, let less be more.
